Helldivers 2 Beginner Guide

Start Helldivers 2 with a practical plan for the core loop: objectives, stratagems, samples, difficulty tiers, and how to reach extraction alive.

What is the core loop of a mission?

Every Helldivers 2 deployment follows the same shape. Your squad drops onto a hostile planet from orbit, works through a set of main objectives, optionally clears side objectives and points of interest, and then extracts via Pelican-1. Missions are grouped into operations, and completing every mission in an operation contributes to the galactic war effort on that planet.

First-drop mission loop

A beginner does not need to clear every enemy. Follow this order to make each deployment count.

  1. 01 Read and prepare

Check the objective list, then call in the support tools the squad needs.

  2. 02 Finish the main work

Complete main objectives first and collect useful samples on the route.

  3. 03 Regroup and extract

Defend the pad together so the squad and its samples reach the Pelican.

For a first drop, treat the loop as a priority order:

  1. Read the objective list on the map before moving out.
  2. Call in your support weapon and backpack stratagems as soon as they are available.
  3. Complete main objectives first — they are what advance the operation.
  4. Pick up samples and Super Credits at points of interest along the way.
  5. Regroup before calling extraction, and defend the pad until the Pelican lands.

How do stratagems work?

Stratagems are support calls from your Super Destroyer in orbit: airstrikes, orbital bombardments, sentry guns, support weapons, backpacks, and vehicles. You call one by entering its directional code and throwing the beacon — the effect lands where the beacon lands, so aim it carefully.

Two habits matter immediately. First, friendly fire is always on: an Eagle airstrike does not distinguish between a Charger and your teammate. Second, stratagems have cooldowns, so throwing one early is almost always better than saving it for a perfect moment that never comes.

Why should you pick up samples?

Samples are the upgrade currency for your ship modules, which give permanent account-wide bonuses such as improved stratagem cooldowns. Common samples are everywhere, rare samples appear from Medium difficulty upward, and Super Samples only appear near the rock formation on the highest difficulties.

Samples are shared across the whole squad at extraction — but only if someone carrying them makes it onto the Pelican. If the carrier dies, ping the body and recover them.

Which difficulty should you start on?

Difficulties run from Trivial (1) up to Super Helldive (10). Higher tiers add more enemies, heavier armor, and better rewards. Start on Trivial or Easy to learn the controls and objectives, then step up as your stratagem collection grows. There is no penalty for playing low difficulties — the galactic war does not grade your bravery.

What squad habits keep Helldivers alive?

  • Watch your fire. Friendly fire is always on, and most squad wipes start with a careless trigger.
  • Reinforce quickly. When a teammate dies, call the Reinforce stratagem right away; throwing it near the fight brings them back with full gear.
  • Share the load. Support weapons with three-round reloads reload faster when a teammate carries the ammo pack.
  • Extract together. The mission result counts every Helldiver on board when the Pelican leaves.

Once the basics feel comfortable, dig into stratagem categories and the enemy faction breakdowns to plan loadouts for each front.
